We would like to thank Macrium Software
for sponsoring the giveaway prizes.

Overview

Macrium Reflect is the answer to any disaster-recovery situation! It is "the" complete recovery-image based backup software you will ever need for home/office use! It will backup your data/sensitive files into protective storage --encrypted and safe from corruption. In the event of computing disasters like partial or whole system failure, Macrium Reflect can recover from any backup image created and restore your data, partitions or even whole hard disks in a matter of minutes!

Macrium Reflect also can help you upgrade your hard disk or try a new operating system with the knowledge that everything is securely saved and can be easily recovered. Taking full advantage of Microsoft Volume Shadow Service data is managed efficiently and can be automatically streamed to a secure storage even when your drives are active and in-use.

With its improved "backup engine", Macrium Reflect version 7.2 is (to date) the fastest of all versions as compared to previous versions. The inclusion of 12 months of Essential Support with a standing home license gives all users the peace of mind knowing that he is covered at all fronts. So he can just sit back, relax and be confident that Macrium Reflect will take care of everything and that's not all of it. If the user encounters any issues while using Macrium Reflect (or just want to ask some questions), Macrium support/technical staff is just chat or an email away! They will respond to you and all support tickets are replied to and solved in the shortest time there is as compared to other developers who drag their feet at the instance/presence of tickets. With Macrium support you are assured that all problems and issues will be solved!

Disk Imaging
Macrium Reflect creates an accurate and reliable Image of a hard disk or the partitions on the disk. In the event of a partial or complete system loss, you can use this image to restore the entire disk, one or more partitions, or even individual files and folders. During the imaging process, Macrium Reflect copies the contents of entire volumes including a reference to their physical location on the storage device to an image file (.mrimg). You would normally store the image file on local or network drives, or removable drives connected using USB or eSATA.

Differential and Incremental Images
Macrium Reflect can create Full, Differential, and Incremental images to optimize backup speed and disk space Full Differential Incremental requirements. When you image a volume for the first time, it is referred to as a image. A   image file Full contains the data Full stored in the volume. Macrium Reflect provides two alternative methods of all backing up your data after the initial full image has been completed:

  • A Differential image that backs up all the data that has changed on the volumes since the last Full Image Differential was taken.

  • An Incremental image that backs up all the data that has changed on the volumes since the   last image taken whether that is a Full, an Incremental or a Differential image.

How to create Incremental and Differential Backups using Macrium Reflect

File and Folder Backups
To create a backup, select the files and folders you want to backup, apply File and Folder filtering   File and Folder criteria to include and exclude files and/or folders, and Macrium Reflect creates a compressed backup file (.mrbak) that can be restored directly or browsed using Windows Explorer. Storing backups in a single file is beneficial because it can be compressed, encrypted and stored elsewhere with ease. As you can for images, you can also create, and   file and folder backups to optimize backup Differential Incremental speed and disk space requirements. File and folder backups are ideal if you only wish to backup specific documents, photos or music, rather than your whole system.

File and Folder Backup using Macrium Reflect

Disk Cloning
Macrium Reflect, you can clone your system disks to enable you to swap failed disks out of your system and get things back up and running again in minutes. Cloning is often confused with imaging. The process is identical but instead of storing data to a file, it replicates volume contents and disk structures to an alternative device. When the cloning process is complete, the target disk is identical to the original and contains a duplicate of all volumes, files, operating systems and applications.

Cloning a disk is particularly useful to upgrade an existing hard disk and in the event of a hard drive failure, you can simply replace the failed disk with a clone and have your system up and running again in minutes. However, cloning a disk is not an efficient way of backing up your data if it changes frequently because the clone will only contain one point in time as there is no 'Backup Chain' history that is available with disk images. Also, "disk images" can be compressed and saved to any location.

From v7.2.4325 (10-June-2019) an additional confirmation check box (confirm/deny) was added to aid users unfamiliar with "Restore/Clone" operation. See "What's New in v7.2.4473" below for more information on improvements.

Cloning a disk using Macrium Reflect

Restoring Images
Macrium Reflect restores disks or their partitions exactly as they were when the backup was taken. The restore process also enables you to expand or shrink partitions if the restore target is a new disk and a different size to the original. If your whole system becomes corrupt, you can load Macrium Reflect and restore your image despite being unable to boot Windows. You can boot from the Macrium Reflect Windows PE rescue media and use Macrium Reflect to find and restore your images.

Restoring files and folders
Macrium Reflect restores selected files and their folder structures from File and Folder backup .mrbak files. There are a number of ways to restore backups:

  • You can restore individual files, for example, accidentally deleted spreadsheets or lost photos by browsing an Image or File and Folder Backup. This process mounts the image file in Windows Explorer as if it were an extra disk drive. After it is mounted, you can browse and open files and copy the files back onto your active file system whenever you like.

  • You can directly restore the contents of a file and folder backup using the Macrium Reflect file and folder restore feature.

Macrium Rescue Media
If in the event that your system or Windows OS is unbootable or if you lose it, you can start the PC using the Macrium Reflect rescue media on CD, DVD, or USB stick. The rescue media contains a bootable, lightweight version of Windows and a full version of Macrium Reflect. This lightweight version of Windows is called Windows Pre-installation Environment (also known as Windows PE or WinPE) and is provided by Microsoft. Macrium Reflect downloads the WinPE automatically for you and writes it to the rescue media. It will download just the components you will need to create your rescue media thus rescue your system.

From v7.2.4433 (20-August-2019), the driver folders for the WinPE/WinRE have been expanded to support multiple architecture and WIM versions. See "What's New in v7.2.4473" below for more information on improvements.

Macrium ReDeploy
From the rescue environment you can launch Macrium to adapt the recovered Windows system to its new ReDeploy environment whether that is a virtual machine or a different computer. With Macrium Reflect, you can ReDeploy restore an image to a replacement computer or even create virtual hard drives to virtualize the machine, a technique sometimes called Physical to Virtual or P2V. Macrium ReDeploy is now included in all editions of Macrium Reflect except for the Free Edition.

VBScript, PowerShell and MS-DOS batch file support
Macrium Reflect stores backup definitions as XML files that are loaded using the Reflect command line. This enables powerful batch and scheduling processing using VBScript, PowerShell or MS DOS batch files. Macrium Reflect includes a VBScript and PowerShell generator that creates template script files for programmable control over your backup cycles and Pre/Post backup events.

Macrium Reflect - Rapid Delta Restore Animated Demo

Macrium Rapid Delta Restore (RDR)
The concept of RDR has been something that has been thought about for quite some time here at Macrium Software. We were aware of competing technologies that offer fast restore capabilities but wanted to build something better.

Where Macrium RDR differs is that it isn't dependent on VSS and a delta restore can be perform to   any disk that has a previous copy of the imaged file system, no matter what its current state. This means that you can restore quickly back to the original disk (similar to the Open Snapshot) method, and have the flexibility to restore to a different disk that contains the same file system on it in any state.

  • Known state restore

This method performs a restore of an incremental image to a file system at a. The problem with this known state method is that the 'know state' must be prepared beforehand and the target disk cannot be accessed before the final 'rapid' restore. This means that the target disk for the restore cannot be the original 'live' disk and a previous restore of the same backup set must have been performed beforehand and the disk taken offline. Not very flexible.

  • Snapshot restore

Another method is to rely on an open Microsoft Volume Shadow copy Service (VSS) snapshot and use this to restore back to the state when the snapshot was created. Very quick, but only allows restoration back to the same disk and the image must have been created with VSS. Again, not flexible enough for real world.

Macrium Rapid Delta Clone (RDC)
As with Rapid Delta Restore (RDR) the concept of RDR has been something that has been thought about for quite some time here at Macrium Software. We wanted to build a clone solution that would effectively and rapidly copy only the differences between the source and target file systems. The advantage of this is obvious, RDC offers similar a performance increase as an Incremental disk image offers over a Full image and enables regular clones to be a viable and fast DR solution.

Changed Block Tracking (CBT)
Macrium Reflect Changed Blocked Tracker (MRCBT) reduces the amount of time it takes to perform incremental and differential images by monitoring the changes to an NTFS formatted volume in real-time. This is especially relevant when a file system contains very large files, such as virtual hard disk (VHD) files, where speed improvements are significant and can reduce the incremental image time from hours to minutes or even seconds.

From v7.2.435 (10-June-2019) the CBT file format has been optimized and improved for efficiency. CBT and Reflect now ignores the "PortableBaseLayer virtual disk" used by the "Sandbox feature" in Windows 10 Build 1903. See "What's New in v7.2.4473" below for more information on improvements.

Macrium viBoot
Enables you to instantly create, start and manage Microsoft Hyper-V virtual machines using one or more Macrium Reflect image files as the basis of the virtual machine storage sub-system. Macrium Reflect 7.1 also includes an updated version of viBoot.  viBoot provides instant virtualization of Macrium disk images to create a running Virtual Machine in a few seconds. This update to viBoot allows future support for other hypervisors such as VMware.

Macrium viBoot Demonstration

Macrium Image Guardian (MIG)
The new Macrium Image Guardian (MIG) feature will prevent unauthorized modifying of Macrium Reflect backup files on local and USB attached volumes. MIG provides assurance to every Macrium Reflect 7.1 user that their latest backups are recoverable, even after the worst-case scenario of a ransomware attack. MIG is focused on the single task of protecting Macrium Reflect backup files, so has a small footprint and is very easy to administer. MIG protects backup files on local NTFS volumes by blocking unauthorized write activity. MIG is network aware and allows other networked Macrium Reflect v7.1 clients to backup to shared MIG protected volumes. See "What's New in v7.2.4473" below for more information on improvements.

Bug fixes and Improvements v7.2.4601 - 24th December 2019

Image Mounting

  • Un-mounting an image failed if Windows Explorer was showing the mounted drive letter. This has been resolved.

Bug fixes and Improvements v7.2.4594 - 23rd December 2019

Image Mounting

  • A small number of customers reported that they could not mount Macrium Reflect images after dismounting a previously mounted image. This has been resolved.

viBoot

  • We've improved the ability for Reflect to detect bootable image files and enable the 'Boot Image' functionality in Reflect.

Bitlocker system restore

  • Automatic system restores for BitLocker encrypted system volumes could perform a 'BitLocker Removal' restore instead of the expected 'BitLocker Live' restore. This has been resolved.

VBScript & PowerShell

  • The 'Run Once a Day' option when generating PowerShell and VBScript source files didn't behave as expected for scheduled tasks using the SYSTEM account. This has been resolved.

Verify File System

  • The 'Verify File System' default image option was not honored if unchecked for scheduled images running using the SYSTEM account. This has been resolved.

Rescue Media Builder

  • The default location for PE files has been moved back to $PROGRAMDATA$\Macrium\Reflect'.
  • On Windows 7, when building Windows PE rescue media, RMBuilder will now use the Dism.exe corresponding to the wim, rather than the Dism.exe from the WAIK.
  • On Windows XP, the radio button labels for boot menu options would sometimes be truncated. This has been resolved.
  • If the "override WinPE compatible drivers" checkbox was unchecked, custom USB drivers would sometimes not be included into the rescue media. This has been resolved.
  • If there was more than one version of the Windows ADK installed, RMBuilder would not copy required files from either installed ADK, and would instead prompt for a download. This has been resolved

"What are your positive and negative experiences with Macrium Reflect (free/paid versions) and what feature/s do you want to see included or improved in the next version build?"

Pros: What I like best about Macrium is the feeling of security that it gives. It's extremely easy to install and configure and once it's done, your backups can run on a schedule or manually. The most useful feature of this software is without question its cloning / backup ability. I've used it over 4 times to clone HDD's to SSD's- to keep from having to transfer everything manually and reinstall Windows. I've also used it to keep backups, which it has a genius way of doing. It’s FREE. Great imaging software. This is a powerful and easy to use software package. You can even boot your backup in a virtual machine! I love that Macrium Reflect has a simple to use interface with tons of automated processes. You do not have to be a wizard to figure this out, actually...anyone could. The software will auto-detect connected drives and display them in a logical format for simple understanding of internal drives vs. external drives. The cloning process is amazing and never had a fault with it. It will clone everything properly, all partitions, recovery partitions even, MBR, everything.
One surprising feature available in Macrium Reflect Free is the ability to boot my backups in viBoot, the Hyper-V VM that ships with the backup software.
Cons: Have yet to run into any issues with Macrium and it is free so cannot complain.
There is no cloud upload functionality, so it is a manual process to backup images.
The program installs through a download client and requires a very large download to complete. The client was slow and resource intensive.
It seems there could likely be a better way to deliver the software.

It needs a face lift I guess, and they could stand to offer some cloud options for storing portions or entire images in the cloud.

Thanks for this contest!  Thanks to Macrium Reflect.  Merry Christmas to all!

Thanks a lot for the giveaway. Macrium is the best backup software that lets me have fast backup, drive image and clonoing. I was able to change my HDD with completely safe data and easy restore of all my information and system. In addition, Macrium Image Guardian (MIG) feature prevent unauthorized modifying of backup files on local and USB attached volumes which keeps my backup completely safe. Macrium Reflect rescue media was very useful when my PC was not bootable after crash of my HDD

I never have a problem with Macrium software, I hope to have built-in option to store image files and backup in cloud space associated with subscription to Macrium

"What are your positive and negative experiences with Macrium Reflect (free/paid versions) and what feature/s do you want to see included or improved in the next version build?"

I am currently using Macrium Reflect Free Edition one of my PC's and it helped me some months back to restore my PC to a working condition. I had updated some drivers which led to my LAN and Wireless networks being dysfunctional and some other problems. I tried everything but of no avail. I then restored my computer using the system image I had created some time before the issues and everything went on smoothly and everything was back to normal functioning without any issues. I therefore have had only positive experiences using Macrium Reflect. I also like its speed of backing up and restoring- I think it is fastest in any backup app  I have seen till now. I don't currently have any suggestions for future version build as I don't find it lacking in any aspect right now. Followed(already following) on both facebook and twitter!!
Thanks to both jasonX and Macrium Team!!

"What are your positive and negative experiences with Macrium Reflect (free/paid versions) and what feature/s do you want to see included or improved in the next version build?"

Macrium Reflect Home is a well-rounded backup and imaging solution and I have been using it on my desktop and it's great imaging software to use. As compared to other imaging and backup the only negative experience I see is the image file size. Macrium's is a bit bigger than other alternatives but this is only minimal and can be waved off versus the 100% performance it gives you.

On improvements well i addition to the reduction in imaging file size I guess its the interface if Macrium can improve on a new user interface. Other than that Macrium Reflect has been a great imaging and backup software. Never had any issues with it. I'd like to join so I can use Macrium Reflect Home in this laptop as it only has the free version.

Thanks for this opportunity to win a license and thank you to Macrium Reflect for sponsoring our forum!

Macrium Reflect is one of the best backup software, it is very reliable and fast, and on one occasion I needed to save the disk copy, when other backup programs failed, Macrium Reflect was the only one able to make the copy and restore it.
I would like the possibility of choosing more languages as a new feature, for example Spanish.
thanks for the giveaway

"What are your positive and negative experiences with Macrium Reflect (free/paid versions) and what feature/s do you want to see included or improved in the next version build?"

I am using Macrium Reflect 7 Workstation on my desktop computer and Macrium Reflect 7 Free on my notebook. I'd like to win a license of the Home version to be able to make incremental and password protected backups and to use the rapid delta restore feature on my notebook as well.

After I lost a lot of data because of a hard disc crash some years ago, I am making backups almost every day. I tried almost every backup software on the market and in my opinion, Macrium Reflect is the best of them. There are a lot of reasons for this, but the most important one, expecially for a backup software, is its reliability. In this aspect Macrium Reflect is outstanding. Macrium Reflect is the only backup software that never let me down.

Another great and unique feature of Macrium Reflect is rapid delta restore and rapid delta clone. With this feature I am using Macrium Reflect as a snapshot software as well. Before installing a new software for example, I use to make a quick incremental image, and after I tried the software I can quickly turn back to the former state of the computer by restoring it with rapid delta restore. I takes only about two minutes.

The only negative thing I found out so far is when restoring a bitlocked partition. I couldn't get it working with Windows PE, only with Windows RE. And even when restoring a bitlocked partition with a Windows RE Boot entry of Macrium Reflect, it doesn't always use the bitlockeer Live Restore feature. Sometimes Macrium Reflect restores the partition without bitlocker, though when creating the restore job, Macrium Reflect indicated, that it will restore the partition from an ecrypted image to an encrypted partition. In this case, I have to encrypt the partition again and also update the boot menue because of the new bitlocker key. I didn't find out yet, why this sometimes happens.

In a future version of Macrium Reflect I would like to have a feature to add comments to every single Backup (like "before installing software xyz"). This could be realized by adding an option to the menue for creating a new Backup job, which lets you select if Macrium Reflect shall ask for a comment every time the backup job is started, or not.

Another thing, that doesn't bother me, but other people, is the surface with it's many possibilities to configure the software and the backup jobs. For me, this is great, because I like to have as much control as possible. But I coudn't convince my girlfriend for example to use Macrium Reflect as well. For her, the software is much too complicated and deterrent. Maybe Macrium could add a possibility to switch the surface between a simple gui with standard settings, and an advanced gui with all the possibilities the software offers.

I also experienced, that making a backup of files and folders is much slower than making an image of a whole partition. That's why I use to make only backups of whole partitions even though it contains folders, that I don't need to save. It would be nice, if the file and folder backups could be speeded up, but I guess that this is technically hard to realize.

Thank You Geeks and Macrium Reflect for this great Giveaway.
I wish you all a Happy Hew Year! Heart

"What are your positive and negative experiences with Macrium Reflect (free/paid versions) and what feature/s do you want to see included or improved in the next version build?"

Macrium Reflect I previously used in the free version of Macrium Reflect Free and this program when creating a backup no difficulties arose, except for a large load on the processor and memory.
From pluses it is possible to mark the backup copy can be recorded to DVD (it will be split across multiple disks), high speed of backup creation and dostaochno good (two to three times) compression of the output backup file.
The paid program can be supplemented with the function of creating a backup in a secure cloud storage.

Thanks for this contest! Thank you Macrium Reflect! Happy New Year everyone!
