The landscape of the CPU market has undergone significant transformations in recent years, with AMD playing a substantial role in driving these changes. The last-generation AM4 socket was distinguished by its prolonged support, a commitment that AMD has fulfilled. Introduced in 2017, the AM4 socket continues to receive support to the present day, with the expectation of new CPU releases slated for the upcoming year.

The people considering upgrading are paying attention to AMD plans, as this could mean lower upgrade costs in the future. AMD’s main competitor, Intel, has not made any promises to retain socket support for as long as AMD, and if not for the 14th Gen Core Raptor Lake Refresh, this generation would have probably already ended. The next stop for Intel is LGA-1851 platform which is said to support at least three generations of product: Arrow Lake, Arrow Lake Refresh and most likely Panther Lake series.

AMD new AM5 socket adoption has seen a slow adoption mainly due to the upgrade cost to new CPUs which also dicated new motherboards and DDR5 memory, which was not cheap at the time. Now, with new memory reaching its lowest prices yet, AM5 motherboards portfolio dropping below $100 and Ryzen 7000 seeing almost 20% price drop since launch, the incentive is on AMD side and gamers take notice.

David McAfee, AMD’s Corporate Vice president and General Manager of their Client Channel Business, sat down with Briony Hannam representing OverclockersUK, one of the largest PC hardware retailers in the United Kingdom, who have been working with AMD for many years. One of the questions about the AM5 socket is whether AMD has any plans to stick to its long-term plans, or are there any changes in that regard. To which McAfee responded that AMD will indeed keep the AM5 socket for as long as they possibly can. The company is committed to supporting it in 2025 and beyond.

Quote:Briony Hannam (OCUK): Is there an update on AM5 socket support or does the original statement from AMD to continue support through 2025 still stand?

David McAfee (AMD): It absolutely still stands! I think that we certainly recognized that the longevity of the AM4 platforms was one of the biggest reasons that led to the success of Ryzen and as we think and as we think about the future, 2025 and beyond, that decision to move to a next-generation of socket is one that’s going to be really thought through really really carefully.

We know the impact that moving to a new socket brings and we want to stay on AM5 for as long as we possibly can. We are firmly committed to 2025 and beyond and we will see how long that promise lasts beyond 2025.

It is obviously great news, but it should be noted that this is not particularly new information. AMD planned to support 2025+ platforms from the beginning, and they clearly haven’t changed their plans. What’s left to find out is how long it will be supported, and if AMD plans to release new CPUs once the new socket (AM6?) comes out.

If we look at the AM4 socket, we can expect support for at least 6 to 7 years. The rumors suggest that AMD will continue to offer new 5000X3D and 5000GT processors for this socket in the upcoming year. AMD is further committing to improving memory support on the platform. The series has already received many updates in that field, either by enabling higher transfer speeds or by introducing 24/48/64GB memory support.
