Hardware leaker YuuKi_AnS shares the very first photos of the next-gen AMD data-center processors.
AMD is gearing up for the launch of a new series of EPYC processors, introducing the Turin Classic and Turing Dense models with a Zen5 microarchitecture. These processors boast up to 128 Zen5 cores or a 192 Zen5c design. Notably, the upcoming CPU series will support DDR5-6000 memory, along with CXL 2.0 and PCIe Gen5 standards. They will, however, maintain socket compatibility with the existing SP5 socket.
The new leak showcases new CPUs from various angles, revealing that there’s no change in design from the previous Genoa (Zen4) series. However, a noticeable change lies in the color of the bracket used for transportation and socket installation, now sporting a distinct blue hue. While the leaked information doesn’t explicitly identify the specific part displayed as an engineering sample, the OPN code 100-00001245-07 and its 2023 production date are noteworthy.
Accompanying these leaked images, YuuKi has shared two diagrams that confirm the layout of the upcoming CPUs. The classic EPYC design is set to feature one IOD die and 16 CCDs, while the dense variant opts for 12 CCDs. Each compute chiplet will house its 32MB L3 cache, resulting in a cumulative maximum L3 cache of 512MB.
According to other leaks, AMD might be moving away from the ‘classic’ and ‘dense’ core designators with the introduction of the Zen6 architecture. Instead, the company might advertise each EPYC series for a different group of customers: general purpose, cloud, technical, and telecoms.
The disaggregated approach to chiplet design leaves AMD with many options for various configurations, those tiers may not be the only segments that AMD is looking to fill. Furthermore, AMD MI300 XPUs will at some point replace some classic CPU designs by integrating CPUs into one package. It is possible that the future of EPYC series will look different from what the company has established over the past few years.
