Yesterday AMD lifted the review embargo on its Ryzen 9 7000X3D desktop CPU series. The only problem is that almost no one had access to a 12-core 7900X3D SKU, which left many of the fans wondering if they should preorder one today.

In fact, there was just one review featuring this processor from Japanese content creator “Uncle FPS“. It confirms that the new CPU is faster than 7900X in gaming and requires significantly less power
.
Despite nearly no availability of 12-core X3D CPU to reviewers, AMD later confirmed that the 7900X3D has 6 cores active in each chiplet. This means that there are no uneven configurations such as 8 cores in 3D V-Cache chiplet and 4 cores in normal CCD.

Quote:I got an official confirmation on how the cores with and without the additional cache are distributed on the Ryzen 9 7900X3D: „The Ryzen 9 7900X3D has 2 CCDs, each of which has 6 cores.“

The illustration of how this works was shared by Andreas Schilling, who also made a mockup of 16-core and the upcoming 8-core model. The latter being exclusively based on one CCD with 3D V-Cache, is expected to be the best gaming Ryzen CPU of all three models. Although it wasn’t tested it yet, there are many simulations in yesterday’s reviews based on an idea that one chiplet can be disabled.

With nearly no 7900X3D coverage from reviewers and the sale embargo lifting in just a couple of hours, gamers will have a tough choice between 7900X3D, 7900X, 7700X or 7600X SKUs. AMD reluctance (or strategy) to limit the supply of 7900X3D samples certainly did not make this choice easier.
