What's the biggest mistake people make when buying a used Japanese import in the UK?

I’ve been looking into Japanese imports recently, and one thing I’ve noticed is that many buyers focus almost entirely on getting the lowest price. While there are some fantastic deals available, I think that approach can sometimes lead to unexpected costs later on.

A lot of people assume that all second hand cars from Japan are in perfect condition because of Japan’s strict vehicle standards. While many are exceptionally well maintained, it’s still important to do your own research before making a purchase.

Here are a few mistakes I think buyers should try to avoid:

Not checking the vehicle's auction sheet or service history.
Ignoring shipping, registration, VAT, and other import-related costs.
Assuming insurance will be straightforward without getting a quote first.
Forgetting to confirm that replacement parts are readily available in the UK.
Overlooking MOT requirements and any modifications needed for UK roads.
Buying purely based on photos without asking for additional inspection details.

I also think it's worth comparing several vehicles instead of rushing into the first one that seems like a bargain. Spending a little extra time researching can make a huge difference in the long run and help avoid expensive surprises after the car arrives.

Japanese imports can be excellent value, especially if reliability is your priority, but preparation is just as important as finding the right model.
