Combining the strengths of both worlds, the Dragon Range platform features the power-efficient Zen4 architecture along with the dual-chiplet design known from the Raphael series. Initially recognized for empowering top-tier gaming laptops, it is now making its debut on desktops.

This marks an important moment for Minisforum who unveiled their first commercially available Mobile on Desktop (MoDT) platform, driven by the capable Ryzen 7 7745HX CPU, boasting 8 cores and 16 threads. Although the company currently showcases this model on its website, indications strongly hint at an impending 16-core variant known as Ryzen 9 7945HX.

The system is bundled with an integrated cooling solution, leaving only memory, storage, and a power supply as additional requirements. Designed to seamlessly fit into any Mini-ITX compatible motherboard, the company also provides a list of supported cases, ensuring compatibility across the board.

The standout feature of this platform lies in its support for PCIe Gen5x16 GPU and 2x Gen5x4 storage — making it the first Mini-ITX board capable of unleashing the full potential of these devices without any limitations, unlike its Intel counterparts with their 16-lane constraints. However, it’s important to note that AMD and NVIDIA have yet to release Gen5 graphics cards, but the platform’s future-proofing is worth noting.

Such a platform may offer the flexibility of using PCIe Gen5 adapters for expanding storage options, potentially transforming this compact machine into a capable storage server. Additionally, the Dragon Range processors are equipped with an integrated RDNA2 GPU, and this board includes all essential display connectors—HDMI, DisplayPort, and USB Type-C—supporting resolutions up to 8K, as claimed by Minisforum. There is no need for a discrete GPU at all.

In terms of pricing, the Dragon Range platform is attractively priced at $399, encompassing a CPU, motherboard, and cooling solution. Users only need to complement it with SODIMM DDR5 memory modules and storage. However, it’s worth noting that the current price is labeled as an ‘early bird sales’ offer and may not remain at this level for an extended duration.
