For those who haven't heard of the games before, the Commandos series is set in World War II and features a group of soldiers. Each soldier has his/her unique combat/stealth techniques.
The game is a real time tactics strategy game, where you will control each soldier's actions individually, from an isometric view. Some missions require stealth, while some missions require you to play aggressively. It is a hybrid keyboard-mouse game, which heavily relies on the mouse for movement, and hotkeys for actions.
Commandos 2 and 3 have a little bit of auto-combat options, which you can use to make a soldier provide cover for allies, or to set up an ambush, etc. 2 and 3 also allow you to move in to rooms inside buildings, more variety of enemies, and more. My favorite campaign is the Saving Private Smith mission in C2, which is quite similar to the movie Saving Private Ryan.
BCOD and BEL are classics which are much harder, and do have a ton of missions.
All of these games have mods including HD graphics mods and complete gameplay mods such as the Destination Paris mod, which completely overhauls the combat and inventory mechanics.
