AMD has announced Versal Premium Gen 2 Memory on Package, a new version of its adaptive SoC with LPDDR5X memory integrated into the same package. The company says the MoP design supports up to 32GB of LPDDR5X and up to 288GB/s of bandwidth. AMD also claims the package can reduce board area by up to 60% compared with discrete memory designs.
Memory moves into the package
Versal Premium Gen 2 MoP is aimed at physical AI, networking, test and measurement, professional video, secure communications, and aerospace and defense systems. These markets often need high memory bandwidth in smaller board layouts.
AMD is not using HBM for this design. The company instead points to LPDDR5X and long product support as the main advantage. Versal Premium Gen 2 MoP devices are planned for 15-plus-year availability, which AMD says helps avoid redesigns linked to shorter HBM refresh cycles.
The new devices also include CXL 3.1 and PCIe 6.0 hard IP at 64Gb/s. AMD says the chips can be paired with EPYC processors and CXL memory expansion modules for systems that need more memory resources.
