Samsung announces 50MP ISOCELL sensor with Dual Pixel and Tetracell technology

Samsung has announced a new 50MP ISOCELL GN1 sensor with large 1.2um-sized pixels. It is the first image sensor from the company to offer Dual Pixel as well as Tetracell. The additional of Dual Pixel will ensure that the sensor's autofocus performance is not affected in any way as seen on the 108MP ISOCELL HM1 sensor used on the Galaxy S20 Ultra.
 
The sensor has 100 million phase detection auto-focus (PDAF) agents which allows it to focus on objects from any corner of the sensor in an instant. Samsung has also developed a software algorithm to go along with the sensor that will allow it to capture photos with up to 100MP comparable resolution.

By using Tetracell technology, Samsung is improving the low-light imaging capabilities of the sensor as well. The ISOCELL GN1 sensor will bin four pixels into one that allows it to double each pixel size to 2.4um and increase light sensitivity by 4x. The sensor will output 12.5MP photos using Tetracell technology. Other specs of the sensor include gyro-based EIS, Smart ISO, real-time HDR, and support for recording 8K videos at 30fps.
 
The sensor goes into mass production from this month so it should start making its way on smartphones by the end of this year.
