Dell unveils new tool to protect PCs from BIOS attacks as people work remotely

Dell introduced today a new security offering designed to help protect PCs from cyber attacks at the BIOS level. The company notes that cybercriminals are "altering their attack methods to compromise endpoints and access critical data" as more people are increasingly resorting to the work-from-home program due to coronavirus-related concerns.

To beef up endpoint security, Dell's new SafeBIOS Events and Indicators of Attack (IoA) provides security organizations the ability to check the security status of the PCs of their employees by detecting changes in BIOS configurations, which will indicate potential attacks. The tool uses a behavior-based system for advanced endpoint threat detection. Dell explains the importance of BIOS security:

"Securing the BIOS is particularly critical because a compromised BIOS can potentially provide an attacker with access to all data on the endpoint, including high-value targets like credentials. In a worst-case scenario, attackers can leverage a compromised BIOS to move within an organization’s network and attack the broader IT infrastructure."

When the tool detects a potential threat, it sends alerts to security departments in their management consoles and helps them launch a response even against an ongoing attack. The BIOS security tool is available for download on Dell commercial PCs worldwide.
