We would like to thank Cologne Code Company e.K. for sponsoring us the giveaway prizes

Overview

XYplorer is a feature-rich file manager for Windows. This file manager features tabbed browsing, a powerful file search, a versatile preview, a highly customizable interface, optional dual pane, and a large array of unique ways to efficiently automate frequently recurring tasks. It’s fast, light, and portable! XYplorer enables the user to navigate disk directories and perform file operations in a user-friendly workspace. It comes packed with dual panes and multi-tab support, among others. XYplorer sports numerous handy features, such as support for scripts to run macros, file checksum calculation, custom hotkeys, UI customization, duplicate finder, favorites, tags, labels, and advanced user-defined commands. All actions may be examined in log files and can be undone. Help documentation is readily available to the user anytime to guide him.

Various kinds of information can be copied to the Clipboard, such as file or folder name, path, base, short or UNC path, along with name, bytes, date of modification, path and MD5 checksum. File information can be either compacted or extended, while items can be duplicated in several ways, by copying them with increment, current or last modified date, for example.

XYplorer makes it possible to delete locked or long files, permanently eliminate them by bypassing the Recycle Bin, swap names, alter the last modification date by synchronizing it to the current date or EXIF information, as well as display hash values in order to check a file's integrity (CRC32, MD5, SHA1, SHA256 and SHA512). Meanwhile, file metadata can be copied to the Clipboard, names between two selected files can be swapped, and items can be compressed in ZIP archives.

Similar to Windows Explorer, XYplorer has multiple viewing modes available, such as small icons, list and details. The thumbnail viewing mode can be customized in terms of width and height, speed, zoom mode, cache, style, and so on. All files and folders shown in XYplorer can be sorted in multiple ways, while the columns with file details can be handpicked for display. The application also integrates a history window with accessed files and folders, putting a search function at users' disposal.

Advanced PC users can write entire scripts from scratch to run macros to simplify the entire task by automating repetitive actions, which basically allows them to leave the workstation unattended. These can be saved to file and loaded later in TXT or XYS (XYplorer Script) format.

XYplorer's program configuration offers numerous options to tinker with, from tree and list view, sorting and renaming, icons, menus and mouse, to colors, styles, fonts, templates, tags and reports. For example, it is possible to customize the file types and categories for preview purposes, tabs behavior when opening a new tab next to the current one or when double-clicking it (e.g. rename, close), as well as features activation/deactivation (e.g. network server caching, tabsets, custom keyboard shortcuts).

Cologne Code Company e.K., (the makers of XYplorer) offers a 30-day trial to all during which several features are disabled, such as the possibility of customizing the main window titlebar. A "free-outdated version" is also offered that can be availed here. The "free-outdated version" though feaure limited and outdated is also great for starters and can in fact rival the file manager alternatives in the market. Note: The XYplorer Free Edition, has been discontinued as of 10-Jan-2017.

XYplorer Highlights

Tabbed Browsing
Users can have any number of tabs in each pane. Those tabs make jumping around between folders a one-click affair. Each tab can be for a different location (browsing tab) or a listing of search results (finding tab). Rename the tabs, drag-shift them around, hide them, lock them, drag and drop files onto the tab headers. The tabs remember their configuration individually and between sessions, and multiple selections are retained on tab switches.

Tabsets
Users can save and load the tabset of a pane, that's all tabs including their layout (tab settings and tabwise list settings) and contents (cached search data, find settings, homes, history, etc..). This concept is also known as Workspaces or Environments. (Pro Edition Only)

While each pane always has exactly one tabset loaded, users can have any number of tabsets available on disk to choose from. The definition of each tabset is held in a folder containing all necessary information within a couple of files. The name of the folder is identical to the name of the tabset. Thus tabsets are perfectly "portable" and easily "maintainable".

More info on Tabsets HERE

Dual Pane
Have the contents of two folders side by side (horizontally or vertically), and move or copy your files comfortably and safely from pane to pane. Both panes are optionally multi-tabbed and can be arranged vertically or horizontally.

Tree and List
The Tree and List offer a suite of unique highlighting options to increase visual grip. Highlight Folder, Boxed Branch, Favorite Folder Bold, Highlight Focused Row, Highlight Sorted Column, Colored Grid, etc. All colors are fully customizable. There is configurable Color Coding for files and folders. The "Tree" is a great user interface for file management but it also poses a problem when it is too large to accommodate. The fact is that the "tree" is always large or too large! This makes the searching or just looking for folders a pain. To remedy this, XYplorer has created "Mini Tree".

More info on Tree Path Tracing™ HERE

Mini Tree
The Mini Tree displays only the paths the user have actually used. This makes browsing very fast (instantaneous even with deeply nested subfolders), it makes the tree ridiculously small! When turned-on, XYplorer immediately reduces the tree to the current folder. Any typical folder in-use will be added to the Mini Tree automatically.

With this "shrinking" the user can look at just the folders he is actually using, instead of being avalanched by all of those folders in-use or not. The user can turn the Mini Tree on/off via View > Mini Tree or in the tool bar.

Catalog
As mentioned previously the "Tree" shows all what's there and can be too much for the user. Another solution (aside from Mini Tree) is the "Catalog".

The Catalog is a very powerful mouse-oriented interface. The Catalog can be turned-on via Window > Show Catalog or via CTRL + F8 (and positioned via menu Window>Arrangement).  The user can drop items onto the Catalog or drop items in a "New Category". The "New Category" contents can be from the "Current List", "Current Mini Tree" or items selected "Selected List Item(s)". By default, it is located right below the Tree. The Catalog has a large context menu (right-click the Catalog) where it can be configured.

More info on Catalog's HERE

Breadcrumb Bars
A user can have a Breadcrumb Bar in each pane. It shows the full path of the current tab and lets you efficiently navigate the whole file system. Each pane's Breadcrumb Bar has its own distinctive color (which, of course, is configurable), so a user can clearly see which pane is currently active. The usage of a Breadcrumb Bar is simple and well-known. A user just have to click on any of the components to go there. Click on any of triangles (separators between the components) to pop a dropdown menu with all subfolders of the component left of the triangle, and select one of them to go there.

Info Panel
The hideable tabbed panel at the bottom-right-corner of the interface provides quick access to information (file properties and previews) and action (Find Files, Reports). If a user needs a fast and friendly image browser, sound browser, or video browser, instant, one-click preview of image (incl. PNG, JPEG, GIF --incl. Animated GIFs), TIFF, TGA, ICO, and photo formats like CR2, CRW, DCR, DNG, ERF, FFF, MEF, MRW, NEF, NRW, ORF, PEF, RAF, RAW, RW2, RWL, SR2, SRF, SRW, X3F, etc. depending on your installed codecs, using high-quality resampling for scaling), audio (incl. WAV, MP3, OGG, APE, etc..), and video (MPG, AVI, MOV, QT, VOB, TS, WMV, etc.. ... not to forget FLV/YouTube) files, with display of detailed media information.

Find Files
XYplorer features a high-end search engine with tremendous power and speed. It fully supports Boolean Logic, advanced pattern matching, Regular Expressions, Boolean RegExp (the Boolean combination of any number of Regular Expressions), whole word and fuzzy matching, content search (look for text strings inside files, wildcards supported), multiple location search, a Duplicate File Finder, and much more. The "Address Bar" accepts not just folders, but also files, scripts, filters, and search terms. Users can enter search patterns directly into the Address Bar. Simply put "?" between location and search pattern (Boolean operators and Regular Expressions allowed). Users can save their current search settings to a Search Template or in a Finding Tab for later one-click re-use. Very handy with complex search patterns or distributed search locations.

Configurable Toolbar
A configurable toolbar where most buttons have a specific right-click menu. Additionally many buttons feature a dropdown menu; the Up button, for example, pops a breadcrumb menu. On top of the factory buttons a user can get/make his "Custom Toolbar Buttons", where he (the user) define how the button looks and what it does when pressed. And, optionally, the toolbar can be scrolled.

Floating Preview
A preview pane separate from the main window, supporting Mouse Down Blow Up and the transparency grid for transparent images. One of the most demanded features. Now with enhanced features, handling, and speed. The Floating Preview, quickly toggled by F11, shows the current file in a non-modal preview window whose size and absolute screen position is stored between sessions. It supports all types of images, and snapshot previews for HTML, PDF, MPEG, DWG, etc.., everything the user's system can generate thumbnails for. Resizing the window resizes the preview in real time.

Hover Box
The "Hover Box" is another way of previewing file info (alternative to "Info Panel"). When "on", a popup window showing a small file or folder preview plus some file or folder data. Images will show a thumbnail and basic file, image, and (if applicable) photo data. The image thumbnail has a max space of 500 x 500 (bounding box), other previews can be slightly larger depending on the file type. The idea is to get a small preview without any clicking, a Zero Click Preview. The Hover Box can be turned on via the Tools > Configuration > Information > File Info Tips & Hover Box or via the toolbar button "Hover Box" icon. When "on" the Hover Box will pop up when you move the mouse over a file's icon. When hovering over the filename, the Hover Box will pop up when you move the mouse over a filename.

It’s Portable!
XYplorer is a portable file manager. It doesn’t require any installation, stores all configuration data in the application data folder, and running it doesn’t change your system or registry. XYplorer does not require any formal installation onto a computer. The user just needs to simply copy it to any desired folder and run it from there. Thus, XYplorer can be stored on a removable storage device (such as a CD-ROM, a USB flash drive, a flash card, etc.) enabling it to be used on multiple computers without requiring any sort of registration or affecting the host system in any way. XYplorer does not use the registry to store its settings. Instead it uses a set of small files located in the application data folder.

Filters
XYplorer offers the user "filters" to make him at ease when dealing with a long list of files. Visual Filters let you control what the user's see in the file list by stating simple wildcard patterns like *.txt or *.jpg. The Visual Filter is per-tab and, of course, saved between sessions. The current filter is displayed on the tab headers in a distinct color. The main commands for Visual Filters are found in menu View > Tab, which is also available by right-clicking the tab headers. There is also a toolbar button "Visual Filter" to quickly toggle the last used filter. The "Toggle Visual Filter" toolbar button got an arrow dropdown featuring a set of predefined visual filters called "Power Filters", ("Image Files", "Modified Today", "Empty Files" and many more). These filters can be customized in List Management. You (the user) can as well use the Power Filters menu to (un)select files by type.

Ghost Filter
The Ghost Filter lets the user do a globally hide particular files and folders from Tree and List (all tabs, both panes). The items to be hidden are identified by wildcard patterns matching their name.

The user can toggle the Ghost Filter either by clicking View > Show Items > Ghost Filter or by clicking the toolbar button "Ghost Filter" (it looks like a ghost). Please note that:

  • Hiding will equally affect files and folders (unless you employ scope prefixes).

  • Hiding will happen in Tree and List.

  • Hidden items will not appear in search results (unless Find Hidden is ticked). But hidden folders are searched for any non-hidden items they might contain.

  • If the current list is actually hiding items by the current Ghost Filter, a little ghost icon is shown in the first section of the status bar.

  • The number of "ghosted" items in the List is counted and shown in the status bar tooltip (left-most section).

  • The Mini Tree is not affected by this, just the Maxi Tree.

  • Named drives are supported if Configuration > Controls & More > Miscellaneous > Support volume labels in paths is ticked. For example, this Ghost Filter pattern will hide folder T:\DVD and all of its contents if named drive "Terra:\" maps to "T:\":
    d: "Terra:\DVD"

Multi-Level Undo/Redo
XYplorer gives the user multi-level undo/redo for file operations Move, Copy, Rename, Delete, and New. Up to 100 user actions are logged and can be undone at any point. They are even remembered between sessions so the user can fix today what was broke yesterday.  The typical use for Undo is when you drag-moved some items into the wrong folder, maybe by a slip of the finger, the famous accidental drop. The user might not even know which folder it was. With Undo, just one click will bring everything back to normal. Even on the next morning after having closed and restarted XYplorer. Optionally the user can perform a cumulative undo, which means that he can undo a whole bunch of actions with a single click. Or he (the user)can perform a non-sequential undo, which means that he can undo any particular action from his action history without undoing the actions that came after.

More info on Multi-Level Undo/Redo HERE

Queued File Operations
Background file operations can optionally be processed sequentially (in a queue), which is often far more efficient than processing them in parallel. With queueing enabled successive operations are lined up in sequence and completed one after the other. E.g. if the user initiates a job, say a Copy operation, while another one is still in progress, the new one will be delayed until the other one is finished. This is also known as asynchronous copy. Without queueing background file operations are processed in parallel. Parallel processing can be quite inefficient and may put unnecessary stress on your hard disks because of excessive head movements.

More info on Queued File Operations HERE

Rapid Access Folders
Rapid Access Folders let you focus on the areas of your file system that are important to you by moving them to the top of the folder tree. With just a few drags and drops, you can see distant locations up close and side-by-side, and create your own customized folder tree with only the branches you need, in the order you want. Shorter paths, less scrolling, no more irrelevant information cluttering your view. Makes your daily file management a whole lot easier. Set 'Rapid Access' visibility in the folder tree by checking it in Configuration > General > Tree and List > Items in Tree and List > Select Items.

Drop-Text-To-File
You can drag and drop a selectable "text" or "data chunk" from any other application onto a folder in XYplorer, where it will be automatically converted into a *.txt file or an *.rtf file, depending on the content. See example below showing text chunk from 'PolyEdit Lite' dragged and dropped into the 'Documents' folder.

XYplorer v27.20.705  (32-bit, 9-Dec-2025)

  • Custom Toolbar Buttons: The new prefix "DIS::" works not only for text buttons, but  for all CTBs, including those with icons. This means you can now place non-clickable icons in your toolbar.

  • Custom Toolbar Buttons: The "DIS::" prefix now has to be the first, so in the Name field it's either of these syntaxes:

DIS::[text]         = Non-clickable button with icon (if icon is defined)
              DIS::text:[text]    = Non-clickable text button
  • Custom Toolbar Buttons: Fixed some "DIS::"-related glitches.

Latest build is 64-bit XYplorer v28.10.1000 (64-bit, 10-Dec-2025)

XYplorer v28.10.0000  (64-bit, 10-Dec-2025)

NEW OFFICIAL RELEASE. Main developments since last release:

  • Copy Current Path. Pressing Ctrl+R now copies the current path to the clipboard. This works regardless of where the focus is or what is currently selected. This small addition could considerably boost your workflow.

  • Color-Coded Overwrite Prompt. A bit of color coding lets you grasp the situation much quicker.

  • Adjustable Length Column. The optional "Len" column can now display either the length of the full path or the length of the file name alone, excluding the path. To change this setting, Ctrl+right-click the "Len" column header and toggle "Show length without path" from the pop-up menu. The list will update immediately.

  • Increased Sorting Speed. Thanks to advances in string comparison technology, sorting speed has dramatically improved. Sorting occurs constantly throughout the application, but is especially important in the file list and tags database.

  • Many Other Improvements.
