On May 1st, AMD marked the 55th anniversary since its founding by Jeremiah Sanders and other co-founders in 1969. For graphics card enthusiasts, the most important date in AMD’s history is July 24, 2006, when the company acquired ATI in a $5.6 billion deal. It wasn’t until August 2010 when AMD finally launched its first AMD Radeon GPU, marking the end of the ATI brand.
Another significant date is March 2nd, 2017, the day the first AMD Ryzen CPU was released. At this point, we are just a month away from the introduction of Ryzen 9000 at this point. Time flies, for sure; I still remember leaking the Ryzen brand.
Brief AMD history
- 1969: Walter Jeremiah Sanders co-founds AMD with seven others.
- 1972: AMD goes public and starts manufacturing computer chips.
- 1996: AMD acquires NexGen
- 2000: AMD launches the Athlon processor, the first 1-GHz microprocessor.
- 2003: AMD announces the Opteron chip for servers, expanding its business reach.
- 2006: AMD acquires ATI Technologies, gaining access to video graphics cards for PCs.
- 2013: Sony PS4 features AMD GPU
- 2014: Dr. Lisa Su becomes AMD CEO
- 2017: AMD launches first Ryzen CPU
- 2023: AMD launches Ryzen Z1 for handheld gaming console
For the 55th anniversary, AMD utilized new AI technologies to restore some old photos, employing colorization and upscaling techniques. Additionally, a 14-year-old video commissioned for the 40th anniversary has been restored using video upscaling software. The video features Jensen Huang himself, who was an AMD employee at some point in his early career.
