Quote:In mid-2022, Google revealed that it was merging Google Meet and Duo into a single app. Now, it has announced that the legacy Google Duo calling will be replaced by Meet in September 2025.
All users who are participating in a Meet call using the latest version of the app will have access to all the latest bells and whistles. However, users with an outdated version of the app may connect to other users via a Legacy call, that offers fewer features than Meet, and the later has steadily been focusing on AI features powered by Gemini.
Duo's calling features offered the following options: Family mode, Moments, Mirror mode, Knock Knock, Low light mode and Data saving mode. These are being retired, but Meet has alternatives for some of these. Moments is replaced by "take a device shot". Low light mode is replaced with video lighting adjustment and portrait touch-up for some users. Data saving mode is replaced with Meet saver mode. So the only features from Duo that are going away are Family mode, Mirror mode, and Knock Knock. Users will no longer be able to send an emoji from the pre-call screen, but you can use emojis during the call. A full list of the differences between Duo Legacy and Meet calling features are available here.
Google is prompting Meet users to export their Duo call history, and video messages from their legacy calling account and message settings. Instructions for these are available on a support page.
