Windows 11 KB5058405 update may prevent some PCs from starting

Microsoft has botched yet another Windows Update. It has confirmed that some PCs may fail to start after installing the KB5058405 update for Windows 11.

Microsoft released the update a few weeks ago, during Patch Tuesday. Shortly after it rolled out the update, reports began to surface that some computers were failing to boot. The error code associated with the issue is 0xc0000098, and displays a message that reads, "Your PC/Device needs to be repaired. The operating system couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors."

An update on the Windows release health dashboard mentions that the issue is to be related to the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface driver, commonly known as the ACPI.sys file. It is a kernel-mode driver that allows Windows to manage hardware resources and power states. Microsoft says that the error could also occur with a different file name. The problem has now been acknowledged as a known issue that primarily affects devices running in virtual machines.

This includes Azure Virtual Machines, Azure Virtual Desktop, and On-premises virtual machines hosted on Citrix or Hyper-V. Microsoft says that Windows Home or Pro users are unlikely to face this issue, as virtual machines are mostly used in IT environments. The company says that is working on a resolution for this issue, and could release an Out-of-band update in the coming days.
