Intel finally releases Application Optimization (APO) update adding 15 new games

Nearly a month ago, Intel promised to keep its APO program alive. However, updates have been so slow that many are now questioning whether the program still makes sense. Intel employees on Reddit confirmed that the focus has shifted toward modern CPU architectures such as Core Ultra, leaving older platforms with limited prospects. Even 12th Gen is still supported, though only through “Advanced mode.”

APO is designed to take advantage of Intel’s heterogeneous architectures, which combine Performance and Efficient cores. Some games are not optimized to use the right cores for specific tasks. Intel addresses this by creating profiles for each game that control CPU process allocation, which can deliver performance gains of 3% to 14% depending on the title.

The software is not automatic. Users must download the Dynamic Tuning framework along with the APO UI software. Once enabled, gamers can either rely on predefined profiles or switch to advanced mode for more manual control.

Quote:AMD adds more FSR4 games

One might have thought that FSR4 adoption would be quicker, but three months since the RDNA4 series was announced, there are only 40 games on the official list.

Unlike FSR3, the FSR4 technology does not require direct game developer support. The only official requirement is prior support for FSR3.1 or direct integration of the FSR4 SDK. In other words, games that already support FSR3.1 will now also support FSR4, but whether it works on an individual system depends on the user’s hardware and what’s equally important: drivers.

This week, AMD released two drivers. One is the official branch called Adrenalin 25.6.1, a WHQL release that most users should install. However, gamers who already own Radeon RX 9000 series GPUs can also check the latest FSR Technical Preview driver, which, according to AMD, is based on the same branch but expands FSR4 support to more games.

We compiled a list of all officially supported FSR4 games and included which driver is required for each title. There are now 65 games on the list, with 28 new games that require either the stable or preview driver.

Quote:SteamOS released

Valve has officially released SteamOS on the stable branch, meaning users no longer need to rely on beta or preview builds to install the gaming focused operating system. Official support for third party hardware is currently limited to a single product, the Legion Go S, although Valve confirms this release also works with other AMD powered handhelds, though support remains limited for now.

The release of SteamOS marks an important milestone for handheld manufacturers. It enables them to ship devices with a popular alternative OS, already proven on the Steam Deck. However, manufacturers cannot freely use the SteamOS name or logo, they still need a license from Valve. While it’s possible that a SteamOS license is more affordable than a Windows license, this has not been confirmed publicly. If broader support for AMD based handhelds is added, we may begin to see new devices shipping with SteamOS. Valve has also confirmed ongoing collaboration with other companies interested in using the OS, though none have been named.
First of all, FSR4 support will depend on whether the game already has FSR 3.1 support. It will work through a manual toggle in AMD Software, meaning users will have control over whether it should be enabled. Intel has crossed a new milestone in its upscaling technology implementation. Although nothing major has happened for discrete Arc GPUs, Intel has launched several integrated graphics products equipped with either Alchemist or Battlemage-derived architectures, now powering new laptops and gaming handhelds.

This, of course, means there is a group of gamers looking forward to Intel working with game developers who are interested in implementing XeSS upscaling into their games. The more options the better, but they still have FSR support if they need it.
Over at SteamDB, one will find an information that XeSS is now available in 201 games (not DLCs/demos). Intel does not have an official page where all games are listed, but such pages are available for AMD and NVIDIA. Alternatively, you may check PCGamingWiki, who are typically the fastest to list new games.

If we go by dates, it seems that in 2024, Intel has added XeSS support for 80 titles, compared to 47 in 2023. The previous years, of course, do not refer to when XeSS was added, but rather when the game was released and eventually received XeSS support. The same applies to 2023/2024.

Intel has released a new update for APO, its special software that can take advantage of Dynamic Tuning Technology (DTT). This feature was primarily an exclusive technology for the 14th Gen Core series but was later enabled for the 13th and 12th Gen Core series.

Before we dive into the new game list update, it’s important to note that the software has also been updated for the new Core Ultra 200K series. Specifically, the Ultra 9 285K, 265KF, and 265K are fully supported, while the Core Ultra 5 245K(F), which has fewer P-Cores, is limited in “Advanced Mode.” This basically means you may not be able to enable APO for all unsupported games, which is possible with full support.

As for the games, Intel is officially adding some E-sports titles like Fortnite, DOTA 2, and CS2. Along with the already supported Rainbow Six Siege, this means Intel is finally pushing APO for more competitive titles. There’s also support for Cyberpunk 2077, Naraka Bladepoint, and three games from the Total War series.
It’s worth noting that Intel used APO for its internal testing when presenting the Core Ultra 200K series, so the performance shown on the official slides is with APO enabled.

As a reminder, APO is supported by Core Ultra 200, 14th Gen Core (desktop and HX variants) in i7 and i9 tiers, 13th Gen and 12th Gen Core Series. But as mentioned, CPUs with 6 P-Cores have limited Advanced Mode support. Check Intel site for details.

Quote:Steam has officially ended support for Windows 7, 8 and 8.1. Users on the legacy versions of the operating systems will no longer receive updates for the Steam client.

It's not unusual for major services to end support for operating systems that are outdated. For example, Steam ended support for macOS El Capitan and Sierra in September 2023. It did so because Apple no longer provides security patches for these operating systems.

Microsoft discontinued support for Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 in January 2023. Many software vendors including browsers such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, have stopped supporting the operating systems due to security risks from unpatched vulnerabilities, and potential malware threats. Similarly, Valve had announced its plans to end support for Windows 7 and 8 on January 1, 2024. That's precisely what has happened now.

Steam stops supporting Windows 7 and 8

In case you didn't know, the Steam client on desktop is based on Google Chromium, and since Chrome has ended support for Windows 7, Steam has to follow suit. This doesn't necessarily mean you won't be able to use Steam on the said operating systems. Valve's official announcement mentions that it expects the Steam client and games to work on the older operating systems for some time, even without updates for the client.

But the company is not guaranteeing continued functionality anymore. The announcement mentions that future versions of Steam will require some feature and security updates that are only present in Windows 10 and above.

Not many gamers are still using Windows 7 and 8

If you take a look at Steam's hardware survey, you can see that only a small fraction of gamers are still using the old operating systems. 0.68% of Steam users are running it on a Windows 7 64-bit PC, while

Windows 7 has a share of 0.06%. Windows 8.1 64-bit has a user base of 0.15%. The majority of PC gamers, are using Windows 10 64 bit, it has a share of 53.45%. Windows 11 64 bit is catching up with an impressive 41.95% share.

Well, if you are among those who were using Windows 7 or 8 you have a few obvious options, you can upgrade to Windows 10 or Windows 11. You may not be able to do so for free, in which you will need to purchase a license from Microsoft.
