We here at GFYI welcome anyone who wants to share blessings via hosting a PERSONAL GIVEAWAY for the community.

I see this "as helping the community" and I personally am very thankful for anything initiated.

I know how hard it is to get sponsors for giveaway / campaigns. Sometimes you end up with nothing at all.

We here at GFYI, are asking that you send a PM about it to me (jasonX) or jayc137. We will accommodate you.

The note at the PERSONAL GIVEAWAYS section is there to remind prospecting hosts and participants. (See, https://www.geeks.fyi/showthread.php?tid=4907)

Please bear in mind (and do bear with us on this) that "exposure" for GFYI is needed and we as Admins can edit your posts as we see it. All posts are for moderation.

I personally require that any PERSONAL GIVEAWAYS be shared via social media because it will help the community even if it is ONLY a small way.

Surely this isn't something hard or so difficult to do.

This is meant for more exposure for GFYI even as mentioned it is ONLY a small way. This also can/may help the "product" being given away. A product being given away, whether it be with the blessing (and approval) of it's developer or without, needs exposure too. You are giving it away not only to help the community here but also help the product be known (surely it is not for personal glory and satisfaction of the member).

As mentioned, we welcome any contribution like these. Send us (or me) a PM and we will accommodate you.

Log in problem

Sometimes I can log in with no problems Other times I can't. It says hello guest. I get this error Authorization code mismatch. Are you accessing this function correctly? Please go back and try again. Anyone else having this problem

I check my PM and I see some text are highlighted in "black"...? I cannot read properly...Is it only me?

Also the autosave is blocking what I type....can that be placed at the bottom and not in middle...hard to see wha I type..

Hello,
I just want to draw your attention at a bug discovered by me when i tried to add a picture in the Macrium giveaway.
The picture function in the message reply box is mixed with italic function so i cannot properly upload pics in my posts.

I don`t know what to tell more, just wanted you to know this in order to fix it.

Forum section re-ordering?

I think it would help the layout if the section ordering was a bit more cohesive.

Current order:
Geeks FYI
Giveaways
Make my Choice
Programming/Development
Games
Security
Software Reviews
MWZ
Deals
Android
iOS
Windows
Hardware
Misc.

Deals would work better below Giveaways.
Move less frequented and more private sections further down (Make my choice, Programming, Reviews, MWZ).
Move Windows above Android and iOS.

Just an FYI for you Geeks (haha), you can get a free SSL certificate by routing the site's DNS through custom Cloudflare DNS nameservers. It'll give you the "Secure" icon in Chrome and give you an HTTPS URL.

Site icon. Yes, this is the question. Would be much better to find site for example from favorites list etc, if it has icon, usually called favicon.ico.
If You need help adding it, I can help. Usually the simplest way is to make one icon file, what should be 16px or 32px, then upload it to root directory and add such a line/rule/code between and directory.

Your url shortning service is being blacklisted by Google

Yeah when I went and did a tweet for a giveaway here, I had the url go.shr.lc/2qLC6Pv in my tweet and it appears that Google doesn't like the url and blocks it. The tweet posts just fine, just clicking on the link will set Firefox off.

My research is showing that if I go to https://www.stopbadware.org/clearinghous...go.shr.lc/ it shows that the entire go.shr.lc/ domain is blacklisted.

I don't know if you want to change the service used to create short urls but wanted to give the head up that you may lose some traffic.

Blocking spammers from signing up

Just a little heads up,

I just looked that the docs on MyBB's forum and someone pointed out that you can block entire domains from signing up.

So if all those spammers are using mail.ru, you could block mail.ru for some time and that would stop spammers from signing up.

Admin CP -> Configuration -> Banning -> Disallowed Email Addresses

then type *@mail.ru or whatever domain it happens to be.

You wouldn't do it for hotmail or gmail, but works great for those Russians mailboxes.

Small tool to help members with applying prefixes

Not sure if you really want/need this but I happen to find this on MyBB's site: https://docs.mybb.com/1.6/Admin-CP-Confi...-Prefixes/

What it does is that it allows you to select a prefix for the topic that you are starting. I think that this would help members so that they don't forget to apply a prefix and make it easy for the members since they don't need to copy and paste or anythng like that.

What do you think?

PS, that link above is for MyBB 1.6 but I guess that MyBB 1.8 would have it too

Impact of disabling visibility of URLs for non-logged-in users

A week ago, we decided to disable URLs from being displayed for non-logged-in users. This decision was made after the Staff held a discussion, and we decided to wait for 2 weeks before disabling the URLs.

The impact has been very positive for the forum. In the past 7 days, as many as 93 members have signed up for Geeks.FYI.

Sure some of them maybe (1 or 2 were) spammers and non-activated users. But we have seen frequent visitors logging in, and some people actually left comments on threads, or clicked "Like" for 1 or 2 posts.

This is exactly why we made the decision. To attract more members, and to also encourage members to contribute to the forums.
