Quote:Apple has just released the 26.5 updates for iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS, and the main new feature is end-to-end encryption support for RCS messages. This is something that has been available for years on Android devices via the Google Messages app, and iMessage on iPhones also supports end-to-end encryption. But now, RCS messages between Android and iPhone users can be encrypted as well.

End-to-end encrypted RCS messaging is available in beta on iOS 26.5, and only with supported carriers. In the US, AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile already support the feature, and you can find the full list of supported carriers around the world on this page.

“Google and Apple have led a cross-industry effort to bring end-to-end encryption to Rich Communication Services (RCS), making the cross-platform messaging format that replaces traditional SMS more secure and private,” Google said today. “Google Messages users will know a cross-platform conversation is end-to-end encrypted when they see the same lock icon previously used in RCS chats.”

iOS 26.5 also introduces the following new features :

Suggested places in Apple Maps: When searching for a place in Apple Maps, the app will now recommend nearby locations based on recent searches and more.

Bluetooth accessory pairing: When plugging in wireless accessories such as Apple’s Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, and Magic Trackpad, they will automatically remain connected via Bluetooth.

Live Activities support for third-party accessories: This new feature, which will only be available in the EU, will allow third-party accessories to receive and display notifications and Live Activities from an iPhone.

New App Store purchase option: iPhone users outside the US will get the option to pay monthly for annual subscriptions with a 12-month commitment.

A new Pride Luminance wallpaper that dynamically refracts a spectrum of colors is also available on iOS 26.5, iPadOS 26.5, and watchOS 26.5. Apple Watch users are also getting a new Pride Luminance watchface with unique customization options. The update also fixes an issue causing messages to use SMS instead of iMessage when paired with a dual-SIM iPhone.

These updates come two weeks after the 26.4.1 releases, which fixed an iCloud data syncing issue and enabled Stolen Device Protection on enterprise devices.

New features will have to wait for the 26.5 versions of Apple’s platform, which are expected to be released in May. The first iOS 26.5 beta released in late March introduced end-to-end encryption for RCS messages, a new “Suggested Places” feature in Apple Maps, and Bluetooth pairing improvements for Apple’s Magic Keyboard, Magic Mouse, and Magic Trackpad. EU users will also get Live Activities support for third-party accessories.

In addition to iOS 26.4.2 and iPadOS 26.4.2, Apple also shipped today iOS 18.7.8 and iPadOS 18.7.8 for iPhones and iPads still running older versions of the platforms. The release notes also only mention “bug fixes and security updates.”

While Apple usually updates all of its software platforms at the same time, there’s no 26.4.2 update for macOS Tahoe, tvOS, and visionOS today. It looks like these users will have to wait for the 26.5 updates, which are expected for next month.
If you missed the news yesterday, the new Studio Display and a more premium Studio Display XDR are Apple’s latest 27-inch 5K displays with a new 12MP Center Stage camera and Thunderbolt 5 ports. With its $599 starting price, the 13-inch MacBook Neo was probably the highlight of Apple’s announcements, though the non-upgradeable 8GB of unified memory is quite disappointing.

Quote:Apple has just released the 26.3 versions of all of its software platforms, and that includes iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS. As often, iOS is getting the biggest changes, as there are no new features for Mac, Apple TV, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro users.

iOS 26.3 and iPadOS 26.3 are getting a new feature designed to limit precision location from cellular networks, but it only works for iPhones and iPads with Apple’s C1 and C1X modems. At the moment, that includes just the iPhone 16E, the iPhone Air, and the M5 iPad Pro released last year.

“With this setting turned on, some information made available to cellular networks is limited. As a result, they might be able to determine only a less precise location — for example, the neighborhood where your device is located, rather than a more precise location such as a street address,” Apple explained in a support document. Turning the feature on also doesn’t impact signal quality, as well as location data shared with friends and family via the Find My app, or emergency responders during an emergency call.

To turn Limit Precise Location on or off, users with eligible iPhones and iPads will need to go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular data options, and then scroll down to Limit Precise Location. As of today, the feature only supports six carriers around the world, including EE and BT in the UK, Telekom in Germany, Boost Mobile in the US, and AIS and True in Thailand.

With iOS 26.3, Apple is also adding a new tool for transferring data from an iPhone to an Android phone without the need to download any app. Google has also been testing a similar feature on Android for transferring data to an iPhone.

Lastly, Apple also released today iOS 18.7.5, iPadOS 18.7.5, macOS Sequoia 15.7.4, and macOS Sonoma 14.8.4. These updates only include security fixes.

Quote:Apple has added a call screening feature in iOS 26 that significantly reduces spam calls on iPhone. The feature filters calls from unknown numbers before they ever ring, allowing legitimate callers to get through while blocking most automated and scam calls.

Call screening is available on all iPhones that support iOS 26. It does not rely on Apple Intelligence and works entirely through the Phone app's built-in settings.

Once enabled, the feature intercepts calls from numbers not saved in Contacts. Depending on the option selected, callers may be asked to state their reason for calling, sent directly to voicemail, or allowed through as usual.

How call screening works on iPhone

iOS 26 offers three call screening modes under the Phone app settings:

Never - Calls from unknown numbers ring normally, matching pre-iOS 26 behavior.

Ask Reason for Calling - Unknown callers are prompted to explain why they are calling. The iPhone does not ring. A transcript of the response is shown so the user can decide whether to answer.

Silence - All calls from unknown numbers are silenced and sent directly to voicemail.

For most users, Ask Reason for Calling provides the best balance. Scam and robocall systems typically fail to respond, while legitimate callers such as medical offices or delivery services can still reach the user.

How to enable call screening in iOS 26

Open Settings.

Quote:WhatsApp is testing an updated Clear Chat experience on iPhone that makes it harder to delete the wrong things when cleaning up storage. The tool is not new, but the flow has been reworked to separate messages from saved items and media types, with clearer prompts and size estimates before anything is removed.

The change shows up when iOS users clear or delete a chat. Instead of a single confirmation prompt, WhatsApp now presents a two-step process that spells out what will be deleted and what can be kept. The aim is simple: free up space without accidentally wiping content that was intentionally saved, like starred messages or specific media categories.

The first screen adds quick actions for clearing messages in bulk. One option removes all messages. Another keeps starred messages while removing the rest. From there, a "Clear media files" option opens a second screen for more granular cleanup.

That second screen is the bigger upgrade. It breaks stored chat media into categories and lets users choose what to remove: documents, photos, videos, stickers, audio files, and voice messages. Each category shows a size estimate, and WhatsApp displays a running total so users can see how much storage will be recovered before committing.
Six apps in particular receive new features that users are likely to notice immediately in daily use.
Reminders gain a long-requested capability. Tasks with a specific due time can now be marked as Urgent, triggering an alarm when the reminder is due. The alert behaves like a standard alarm, including a 9-minute snooze option, and also appears as a Live Activity. This turns time-sensitive reminders into something closer to calendar alarms, closing a long-standing gap in the app.

Apple Podcasts receives multiple enhancements aimed at discovery and navigation. The most notable is automatic chapter generation. Apple uses podcast transcripts combined with its on-device AI models to generate chapters even for shows that do not provide them. This makes skipping and revisiting segments easier, especially for longer episodes. Podcasts also surfaces links to episodes, shows, and media mentioned during playback.

Freeform adds support for tables. The app's open-canvas design already allowed text, images, links, and files, but structured data was missing. Tables bring Freeform closer to Notes in flexibility, particularly for planning, comparison, and collaborative workspaces.
Local capture settings: It’s now possible to change where Local Capture files are saved in Settings > General > Local Capture. A new toggle also lets users capture audio only when recording audio and video in apps and websites.

Slide Over on iPad: The existing Slide Over multitasking feature, which lets an app appear in a small floating window that can be dragged to the left or right side of the screen, is coming back after being removed on iPadOS 26

Quote:Apple has released a security update for many older iPhone and iPad models. This update includes a critical security fix, for a zero-day threat.

This security update completely went under my radar because I was focusing on iOS 26 and didn't check Apple's security releases page. Speaking of which iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26 all ship with a bunch of new security fixes.

Anyway, let's get back to the update for older devices, the vulnerability in question is tracked under CVE-2025-43300. What's interesting about this is that it is the same as the one I wrote about last month. Apple patched a zero-day threat in iOS, iPadOS and macOS on August 20, with the release of iOS 18.6.2, iPadOS 18.6.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.6.1, macOS Sonoma 14.7.8 and macOS Ventura 13.7.8.

Bleeping Computer spotted some security advisories on Apple's website that highlighted the release of iOS 15.8.5, iPadOS 15.8.5, iOS 16.7.12 and iPadOS 16.7.12 to patch the vulnerability. Here's a brief description of the issue, processing a malicious image file may result in memory corruption. For instance, a photo with spyware code could lead to a targeted attack. Apple says it patched an out-of-bounds write issue with improved bounds checking. The release notes mentions that "Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals." As I said, that is a sophisticated mercenary spyware attack targeting individuals like journalists, activists, etc.
