AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX “Dragon Range” processor has better multi-core performance at less

Quote:AMD Dragon Range claims performance crown at less power than Intel Raptor Lake-HX

Notebookcheck has the very first review of AMD Zen4 laptop CPU from 7045HX range.

The 16-core Zen4 Raphael has now been tested by the Notebookcheck team who took brand-new ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo for a spin. Today’s review is focusing only on CPU performance, with more details on gaming performance to follow later (although they did share a teaser).

According to the combined results, the Ryzen 9 7945HX, which is the flagship model from the 7045 series, is almost as fast as Intel flagship Core i9-13980HX CPU in the single-core test and just about as fast in multi-core test. The two processors trade places in both ratings with a gap of up to 5%.

It is worth mentioning that ROG Zephyrus Duo has DDR4-4800 memory, while MSI TITAN GT77 HX 13VI (the platform for Intel HX series) uses faster DDR5-5600 memory.

The AMD CPU has 16 cores and 32 threads, which are all ‘big’ cores, unlike Intel’s hybrid Core/Atom architecture. This means that despite the same thread count, AMD CPU being faster in multi-core test should not surprise anyone.

What is important to note is that Ryzen 9 7945HX consumes less power than Intel 13th Gen Core-HX series. It was measured to top at 120W, while Intel CPUs can go as high as 150W. The reviewer even tested both CPUs with the same power limitation and concluded that the Zen4 architecture is 22% faster if both CPUs are limited to 120W.

The CPU is also significantly faster than the last gen Ryzen 9 6900HX Rembrandt Zen3+ SKU, as tested with the same ASUS ROG Duo laptop from 2022 (the title on this slide is wrong):

The site also provided a very short insight on gaming performance with more tests coming later. Higher power and single-core frequency on Intel CPUs bears fruit in up to 7% better gaming performance. Both the MSI and ASUS systems support GeForce RTX 4090 GPU up to 175W TGP, but there might be other things at play that will be explained with full review.
