Chinese Moore Threads MTT S80 GPU announced with 4096 cores, 16GB VRAM and PCIe Gen5

MTT S80 is the first PCIe Gen5 ‘gaming’ card

Moore Threads announces new desktop graphics card based on a new GPU. 

This Chinese company has only been established in 2021, but has been on a schedule to introduce high-end graphics for data-centers and gaming as quickly as possible. Although we have not seen any MTT GPU in action yet (except public demos), the portfolio of the company is growing rapidly.


 
Today, MTT introduces S80 and S3000 GPUs. The first is a gaming card and the latter is for AI-training/data centers. These should be considered successors to S60 and S2000 respectively, both launched in March this year.

New cards are based on the same architecture as S60 and S2000 GPUs called MT Unified System Architecture (MUSA). The S80 features 4096 cores clocked up to 1.8 GHz. The company promises up to 14.4 TFLOPs of single-precision compute performance, so something in between GeForce RTX 3060 Ti and RTX 3070.


 
New graphics cards are based on a new GPU called MUSA-Chunxiao with 22 billion transistors. The company made significant improvements to MUSA architecture for popular graphics APIs performance. Up to 3.4x better performance with DirectX API and up to 5x better with OpenGL. Moore Threads also claims 4x better video encoding and 2x better decoding speed.



The S80 features 16GB of GDDR6 memory clocked at 14 Gbps, with maximum bandwidth estimated at 448 GB/s. This model comes with four display connectors: 3x DP 1.4a and 1x HDMI 2.1, so the same configuration as RTX 4090. Moore Thread’s own design is a triple-fan and 2 slot card.


 
What is interesting to note is that this card supports PCIe Gen5 x16 interface, technically becoming the first ‘gaming’ card to support it. Moore Threads are confirming some games as supported (DirectX support was introduced with previous generation).

The company is planning major MUSA DirectX improvements next year. During the official showcase, the S80 was demoed in League of Legends and Need For Speed game.


 
The company is also announcing MTT S3000, a special passive design for server enclosures. It comes with the same core count as S80, but it features twice as high memory capacity at 32GB. It is also clocked higher at 1.9 GHz (15.2 TFLOPS). What is uncommon for a passive server GPUs are display connector. This model features two DisplayPort 1.4a.


 

 
The company announced that S80 will be available on November 11th. No pricing has been confirmed yet.
