AMD and Sony Interactive Entertainment have already announced Project Amethyst, a long-term collaboration focused on integrating AI and machine learning into future gaming hardware and software. The partnership, symbolized by the merging of AMD’s red and PlayStation’s blue (hence amethyst), aims to develop foundational AI systems for both PC and PlayStation platforms.

In the short term, both companies are co-developing neural network architectures and training strategies optimized for game graphics, work that already contributed to AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR 4). Mark Cerny confirmed that FSR 4 will be reimplemented on the PlayStation 5 Pro to take advantage of new AI acceleration hardware. Over the long term, the collaboration will extend to designing new hardware architectures for machine learning workloads, influencing upcoming AMD GPUs and Sony consoles, including the PlayStation 6 (name not confirmed).
