Hard to imagine, but it’s nearly three years since PCI-SIG, the organization behind the PCI Express standard, announced the start of its work on the PCIe 7.0 standard. At the time, we had hardly any PCIe 5.0 devices to talk about, but a lot has changed since then. What hasn’t changed is that there are no PCIe 6.0 systems yet, although some technologies were already shown by NVIDIA at GTC 2025 this week.

It will probably take a few years before PCIe 7.0 sees widespread adoption. The 5.0 standard has been around for 3 years now, and only now are we getting true 5.0 graphics cards. As demonstrated by reviews, the data rates of PCIe are not the biggest contributor to higher speeds. In fact, in most cases, it won’t matter unless someone is using a new GPU on an older platform where lanes are limited and the card is set to backward compatibility.
